Friday marked Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 87th birthday. Every year around this time, I hear the same questions presented: What would Dr. King be involved with today? What would Dr. King think of today’s issues, including #blacklivesmatter?
Of course these are valid and thought provoking questions. I would like to take it one step further by asking, “What are we doing individually to affect and nurture change within our own communities?” Please know I am not suggesting we all have to be in the forefront by staging “die-in’s” or marches, as I am strong believer that everything is not for everybody but that does not excuse us from doing something. Here is my initial list of what I can do.
- Go to the local school to volunteer (read to pre-school kids, start a reading program after school, tutor, buy needed supplies that the county will not purchase due to budget constraints, etc.) This would require, I hope, a background check but I know I have not killed anyone or stolen money so I should be good.
- Encourage my neighborhood HOA to connect with the surrounding communities to start a task force in connection with the police department for a safer livable community.
- Mentor a young person but exposing them to things outside of their normal day to day. Who knows, I may be influencing a future POTUS, an engineer or ballerina.
- Feed and/or cloth the homeless. I have to remember that they need resources all year around, not just during the Christmas holiday.
The point is not to allow tomorrow’s unofficial “Day of Service” pass me by without doing something intentional for the greater good. Recently, I was talking to a co-worker, from Generation X (who some consider the lost generation), about Monday’s Day of Service. He truly had no idea what I was talking about. So maybe a part of my day of service is helping those in my generation who are clueless or not interested get involved in some small way.
So, what’s on your agenda for tomorrow and beyond? If you have an event tomorrow you want to promote, share it here.
