For all fellow #nerdland watchers, who are just getting the news like me, I am so disappointed to now learn why we have not see Dr. Melissa Harris-Perry on Saturdays and Sundays from 10am-12pm. If you are not familiar with her show, you really missed a great cup of tea as I would say. Her show brought to light many issues other news cables glossed over for 20 seconds if at all such as the continuous shootings of unarmed Black men, the “mysterious” deaths of Black women, world issues that affect people of color, religious views, etc. My DVR was faithfully set so I would not miss the many discussions from her and the invited panelists. It was here on the MHP Show, I first learned of the issues within the Dominican Republic to white wash the Haitian population. For the last 3 weeks I sat eagerly waiting to hear her perspective on not only the GOP craziness but President Obama’s choice for a supreme court justice seat.
Where this is all so disappointing as I am surfing YouTube right now watching many of the interviews or her mailbox segment (you had to watch the show), I stand united with her. She has walked away from the show that bares her name due to the network wanting to change the format at the same time asking her to report news in a very irrelevant way. No longer would we hear the true detailed versions of the unrest in Ferguson, Mo., the facts behind Sandra Bland’s demise, the in depth interview with then Attorney General Eric Holder, or the educational systems across America with their lack of inclusion and equity. Life is full of risks. To be a change agent in whatever small way each of us can, requires standing on the principles that are important to us. She is one of my modern day Shero’s.
In an email to her staff, posted by her friend Jamil Smith published on Medium Perry says,
While MSNBC may believe I am worthless, I know better. I know who I am. I know why MHP Show is unique and valuable. I will not sell short myself or this show. I am not hungry for empty airtime. I care only about substantive, meaningful, and autonomous work. When we can do that, I will return-not a moment earlier. I am deeply sorry for the ways this decision makes life harder for all of you. You mean more to me then can you imagine.
It’s the end of #nerdland but not the end of MHP and not the end of what you or I can do the make a difference as well.

Great article. I didn’t see her show but I read an article about her leaving yesterday. That article and yours peaked my interest in her program. I’m curious to find out why MSNBC took over the writing. And secondly where will we hear from her again.
As this is an election year, stories like the ones you describe from MHP will get buried under Trump antics and other fodder from candidates. Makes one wonder how can we continue the stories above the election noise. Just a thought.
Thanks @sheisL
